Antonio Fernandez - Pianist and Music Director

Antonio Fernandez is a Spanish-born Australian pianist best known for his work as a collaborative pianist and music director. Having worked with some of the most esteemed choirs in Sydney including Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, Sydney Chamber Choir and Gondwana Choirs, Antonio feels at ease working with other like-minded musicians. Currently, Antonio works as pianist/repetiteur for Opera Australia's Schools Company NSW Tour. He is also the principal accompanist of the critically acclaimed Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir. He has toured Europe with the Pacific Pride Choir, and is also an alumni of Pacific Opera’s Young Artist program.

Antonio was trained at the Royal Conservatory of Music of Madrid and has been a member of the National Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands. Since his arrival to Australia in 2013, Antonio has strived to embrace every single musical genre, but more specifically music for the stage. This has led him to perform with several theatrical organisations like Australian Theatre for the Young People (Spring Awakening, 2016) or Performance Space (Holcombe Waller’s Mass, 2016), as well as several appearances at the Sydney Opera House with Philharmonia Choirs in workshops (Singing in the House: Mamma Mia, 2017) and rehearsals (Festival Choir 2017, Chorus OZ 2017). His experience as a collaborative pianist is nothing short of broad and eclectic, ranging from cabaret shows (Songs for Sarah Connor, finalist of the Short and Sweet Cabaret Festival 2016) to independent opera productions (Il Tabarro, 2016, directed by Constantine Costi; L'Enfant Prodigue, 2017, directed by Lucy Scott), passing through musical theatre pits and recording sessions. In March 2016 he was commissioned to create a music installation that explored the intersection between improvisation, spontaneous collaboration and space for the Art, Not Apart Festival 2016 (WORKBENCH, 2016).

As a music director, Antonio has worked with Ashfield Musical Society (The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, 2015; Sweet Charity, 2016) and for New Theatre’s Sydney Fringe 2016 season (Bathhouse: The Musical, 2016), receiving raving reviews from critics and audiences alike. In 2017, Antonio participated as Music Director and Composer for Felt Tip Theatre's production of Twelfth Night. He will also work as Music Director for the 2017 Sydney Fringe season of The Things I Could Never Tell Steven by Jye Bryant, taking place at the iconic New Theatre.

To the dismay of his friends, he loves boardgames and science fiction.
